TV cashes in on poker

once-a-week poker player long before it got consecrated by cable television, Melbourne's Jeff Kaplan never dreamed he'd actually plop down in front of the boob tube and watch other stiffs play a sedentary game. But last year, a strange thing happened.

Intrigued by incisive commentary, omniscient graphics, card-shark personalities and playing tables ringed by cameras nifty enough to peer into the gamblers' hidden hands, Kaplan got sucked into an unlikely reality-TV drama -- the World Poker Tour, sponsored by the Travel Channel.

Those who want to play poker for charity legally in Texas will have to ante up in the political game.
Changing state gambling law to allow charitable poker fund-raisers will require an amendment to the Texas Constitution, Amarillo-area lawmakers said.

Manteca raises poker stake

MANTECA -- The stakes for wildly popular Texas Hold 'em, made popular on television, just got higher.
At its regular meeting Monday night, the City Council amended the city's card room regulations to increase the maximum number of players per table from eight to 10.

Moneymaker, who qualified for the WSOP by winning a $40 online poker tournament, took home a cool $2.5 million after he defeated Sam Farha in the final round game of No-Limit Texas Hold'em. Moneymaker's win highlighted a recent surge in online gambling that resulted in a 33 percent increase in the tournament's attendance over 2002.

Poker Night Nets $48,000 for Dan Hendricks

A poker night Aug. 14 at Ocean's 11 Casino netted approximately $48,000 for the family of Dan Hendricks, the popular veteran conditioner who was paralyzed in a motorcycle accident in July.
Trainer Christopher Paasch, who organized the tournament, said,
"I think we raised right at $60,000, and I think $48,000 to $49,000 will stay with the Hendricks family. We had about 250 people turn out, with 187 playing. We had a great time and everyone was thrilled to be able to help Dan and his family."
