Seemingly overnight, poker has evolved from the game of cowboys, casinos and college dorms into a full-blown national fad.

Multimillion-dollar tournaments such as the World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour now appear on cable television. Celebrities go nose job to nose job over $250,000 for charity on Bravo's Celebrity Poker Showdown.

There's even a college poker championship that offers $15,000 scholarships to top players.

I’ll admit it. I was nervous Tuesday as I entered Pilot’s Pub for my first poker night.

All right, I was more than nervous. My heart was racing, I could feel the blood rush to my head and my palms were sweating. I had no idea what the night held for me.

I paid the $20 buy-in. That may have been my first mistake.

World Series of Poker coming to Deadwood

DEADWOOD, S.D. (AP) -- The Black Hills gambling town of Deadwood, which has had its notoriety rejuvenated courtesy of a popular cable television series of the same name, will land on national cable TV again in October, this time as a backdrop for the "World Series of Poker."

Bill Walsh, owner of the Franklin Hotel on Deadwood's Main Street, said his contact at ESPN confirmed the show on Friday.

The two-day taping will feature 12 previous winners playing poker in his Main Street-level saloon. ESPN will fly the players to Deadwood, where they will stay at the Franklin. It's scheduled for Oct. 26-27.

Charity poker revs up, revamps prizes

It'll be one sweet ride home from the card table now that Wichita Falls firefighters have reshuffled the prizes of their charity poker tournament.

Without the new deal, there could have been trouble in the casino on July 31. Although all proceeds will go to Operation Santa Claus, the district attorney's office found a seedy looking Joker in the prize structure.
