Tuesday, World Poker Tour Entertainment (Nasdaq: WPTE), the media company behind the Travel Channel's wildly popular World Poker Tour (see Playing on Poker's Draw), made its market debut. The IPO itself was a success, as the company sold 4 million shares for $32 million, or $8 per share; the company had expected a sale price between $5 and $7 per share. However, those shares were also met with a cold welcome; after opening as high as $11, WPTE shares closed out the day down 14% to $6.86.

LAS VEGAS, NV -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 08/11/2004 -- Extreme Poker Ltd.'s (OTC: EXTP) wholly owned subsidiary, The Great Canadian Poker Tournament Ltd., is currently negotiating with a production company to produce a pilot for 13 episodes of the Great Canadian Poker Tournament.
The programming, which is expected to include a celebrity tournament for episode #11, will conclude with the 'Grand Tournament' held at a major Toronto venue, for episode #12 and #13.

Also on Wednesday, WPT Enterprises Inc. (WPTE: news, chart, profile), the company that runs the World Poker Tour TV show, moves into its second day of trades.
The unit of Lakes Entertainment (LACO: news, chart, profile) priced 4 million shares at $8 each in a bid to raise $32 million.
WPT Enterprises priced above its $5-$7 estimated range in a sign of strength. The stock closed $7.19 on Wednesday.

It was getting late in my monthly poker game, down to the last four players from an initial table of eight. I was holding a queen and a three -- not a particularly strong hand for No Limit Texas Hold 'Em, but I was already in for the little blind, so what the heck. Besides, I had won the previous pot, so it was a little easier to play the hand.

Increased popularity of poker wasn't enough to prevent losses at Lakes Entertainment Inc., the Minnetonka-based 80 percent owner of the World Poker Tournament (WPT).
The televised poker tours are so popular that Lakes' subsidiary that organizes the tours, WPT Enterprises Inc., on Monday managed to raise $33 million in an initial public offering of 4 million shares at $8 each.

According to the guidelines set by the International Olympic Committee, a sport must be played on four continents and in 75 countries for it to be considered for certification as an Olympic event.
Lacrosse, which was an Olympic event in 1908, isn't any more. Bowling was an exhibition sport in '36 and '88, but didn't strike a chord. Ballroom dancing had the numbers, but the IOC couldn't figure out what to drop for it. (Suggestion: anything with the word "synchronized").
