HARRISBURG - It doesn't take an act of Congress to get a friendly card game together, but it can take a City Council meeting. That was the case in Harrisburg two weeks ago, when the owners of the Ron-D-Voo Tavern went before the council to get a license to hold a poker tournament.
A city ordinance there prohibits gambling, except for the state lottery. But it makes exceptions for events such as church bingo and "social games," where there is no house player and no income from the operation of the game.

So perhaps it's not surprising that poker's popularity among celebrities is infecting teens. From high school cafeterias to college dorm rooms to professional card clubs, teens and young adults are playing for money, sometimes big money. Many believe they can beat the system.

HARTFORD, Conn. -- The state agency that regulates legalized gambling in Connecticut is echoing Attorney General Richard Blumenthal's statement that barroom poker tournaments are illegal.
The state Division of Special Revenue issued a statement Wednesday after getting several inquiries.

Santa Cruz police arrested a third suspect this morning in connection with the shooting death last month of a poker player who was trying to recover $20 stolen from him.
Sgt. Brad Goodwin said the police used a warrant to search the home of 24-year-old Francisco Valenciano, and arrested him again after originally having to cut him loose for lack of evidence.

STAMFORD -- The battle over poker night may not be over.
At least one bar owner is planning a lawsuit challenging Attorney General Richard Blumenthal's July ruling that barroom poker tournaments violate state gambling laws.

Those who want to play poker for charity legally in Texas will have to ante up in the political game.
Changing state gambling law to allow charitable poker fund-raisers will require an amendment to the Texas Constitution, Amarillo-area lawmakers said.
