When the average Joe off the street thinks of poker, the last thing to come to their mind is a game of strategy, discipline and preparation. Instead images of guys sitting around a kitchen table smoking cigarettes drinking beer and calling out "give me four cards" are common; a game where the ability to bluff and call peoples bluffs makes you a winner.

But the improbable triumph in 2003 of a 27-year-old accountant from Tennessee, who beat some of the world's greatest professional players on national television, has sent the nation into a poker frenzy - and casinos looking to cash in have been quick on the draw.

once-a-week poker player long before it got consecrated by cable television, Melbourne's Jeff Kaplan never dreamed he'd actually plop down in front of the boob tube and watch other stiffs play a sedentary game. But last year, a strange thing happened.
Intrigued by incisive commentary, omniscient graphics, card-shark personalities and playing tables ringed by cameras nifty enough to peer into the gamblers' hidden hands, Kaplan got sucked into an unlikely reality-TV drama -- the World Poker Tour, sponsored by the Travel Channel.

A poker night Aug. 14 at Ocean's 11 Casino netted approximately $48,000 for the family of Dan Hendricks, the popular veteran conditioner who was paralyzed in a motorcycle accident in July.
Trainer Christopher Paasch, who organized the tournament, said,
"I think we raised right at $60,000, and I think $48,000 to $49,000 will stay with the Hendricks family. We had about 250 people turn out, with 187 playing. We had a great time and everyone was thrilled to be able to help Dan and his family."

When Tony Ricciardi gets together with his friends every week to play poker, it's not the money, the competition or the love for the game that he revels in.
After all, to date, he's lost seven weeks straight.
"Even though I lose, for me, it's like going out to the bars," said Ricciardi, a 24-year-old State College resident.
